The World According to Biomes
A peaceful approach to geography uses natural rather than political boundaries. The curriculum integrates geography with the sciences and language to help children make connections and see the world as interdependent. The critical need for environmental education is addressed with a curriculum that teaches:
• Energy comes from the sun
• Energy moves in cycles
• Everything in nature is connected to everything else
• Plants and animals are especially adapted to their natural environment
The Waseca Curriculum was developed in Montessori classrooms for use by children ages three to twelve. Montessori principles are inherent in the design of the materials. They encourage independent learning with manipulative materials that involve the child in the process of learning. Initial presentations are general before becoming more specific and incorporate concrete materials that children can touch and manipulate before introducing more abstract pictures. In addition, many materials are designed to isolate a specific difficulty. There is usually a control of error so that the child can self-check his work. Often, the materials are open-ended and allow for creative uses and extensions. You will notice as you peruse the site that the materials are aesthetically pleasing and inviting to capture a child’s interest.
