Biomes of a Continent

Designed for elementary classes (8 to 12 years), this material covers all the biomes found on a particular continent and offers a structure for independent research. Each biome is explored with an example of each of the five classes of vertebrates, an invertebrate, and a plant. Each biome also has a card set for a group of people and how they meet their basic needs within their biome. While indigenous cultures are emphasized as models of sustainability, rural and urban cultures are depicted as well for a realistic view of people on the continent. A teacher’s manual outlines lesson presentation and offers ideas for extensions. A biome map and black line masters of the illustrations are included. All sets are cut and ready to laminate.

Biomes of North America »
If you are native to this continent, this is a good place to start. The North American continent has every biome and much diversity. Many of the plants and animals will be familiar to the children and some will be surprising. We used the indigenous tribes of the Navajo and Inuit to represent the desert and the polar regions. The Cajun culture is native to the wetlands of the Bayou. The Amish people of the temperate forest model a sustainable lifestyle. The highland Mayans live in the mountains and the Iowa farm family lives in the grasslands.

Biomes of South America »
South America contains the rich diversity of the Amazon, the largest wetland in the world being the Pantanal, spectacular heights of the Andes, and the driest of deserts in the Atacama. Indigenous tribes include the Yanonami of the tropical forest and the Quechua of the mountains. People in cities of the temperate forests along the southwest coast and rural people of the wetlands and grasslands called the pampas give a realistic impression of the population.

Biomes of Europe »
Europe was once primarily temperate forests. Larger herbivores and carnivores are scarce after more than a thousand years of human populations. Polar regions and the alps make up most of the wilderness. Many welands are coastal or are characterized by mossy bogs. The people of Amsterdam live in a reclaimed wetland. People of the Black Forest have a unique cultural heritage along with the Basque of the mountains. Rural people of the Ukraine farm the grasslands. The Saampi are an interesting indigenous people who have retained their connection to the land and the reindeer.

Biomes of Africa »
Africa is a fascinating continent in terms of wildlife and indigenous people. The Congo Basin provides a steamy tropical biome with a frog the size of a cat. The deserts are varied from sand dunes to thorny scrub. The grasslands are called savannahs because of their tropical nature and are home to many different herds and their predators. There are plants and animals in the mountains of the Rift Valley unlike anything else on the planet. We introduce the indigenous tribes of the Masai of the grasslands, the !Kung of the desert (make a clicking sound at the start), and the Efe pygmies of the tropical forest. People of the Nile Delta live in cities and modern buildings while mountain villages in Ethiopia are remote and independent of global commerce.

Biomes of Asia »
Asia has a sampling of every biome. The Himalayan Mountains contain the tallest of all and the wildlife there is fascinating. It's all there in vast tracts of desert, plains, and forest. Polar Regions contain some of the same species found in North America. Can you imagine how that happened? We explore the Dolpo of the mountains, an Indian town in the Thar Desert, a commune in the temperate forest, Mongolians in the grasslands, Ma'dan of the wetlands of the Tigris-Euphrates, the Nenet of the polar regions, and people in a large city carved out of the Tropical Forest.

Biomes of Australia »
Australia we find to be largely desert in the middle surrounded by grassland with some tropical forest in the north and temperate forest further south. There are wetlands areas along the coast as well. The indigenous peoples being Aboriginal tribes have experienced various degrees of assimilation into western culture. We looked at a tribe in the wetlands and another in the tropical forest. People in Sydney live in the temperate forest, while other live more remotely in the outback regions of grassland and desert. Ranchers exist in grassland while miners and their families live in caves in the desert.

Biomes of Antarctica »
This continent contains only one biome- the polar regions of the south pole. Students can deduce why we found no examples of amphibian or reptile species there. The people are international scientist who meet their basic needs in this harsh environment with care.

Set includes three sets of stamps for identifying the continent, the biome and the class of vertebrate or invertebrate. Children may use the stamps to label their research or stamp their “passport” when they study a continent or biome. Other ideas? Share with colleagues on facebook at Waseca Biomes. (3 to 12 years)
